Born from the UCSF California Preterm Birth Initiative (PTBi), the Center for Birth Justice (CBJ) is transitioning into a permanent and dynamic research center. We are building and amplifying a pioneering model for transformative change. Guided by our core values, including anti-racism, justice, and authentic community partnership, we are devoted to eliminating racial inequities in birth outcomes for Black families. We believe that dismantling racist structures driving these inequities is a critical step towards improving outcomes for all.
Investing in the Center for Birth Justice means partnering with an organization grounded in lived experience and dedicated to catalytic, systemic change. Our approach is boldly centered on those most impacted, driven by the principles of “Nothing About Us Without Us!” and “For Us By Us”. We are bridging the gap between research findings and actionable change by co-creating solutions alongside the communities we serve.
Your investment is not just support; it’s an offering rooted in mutual aid and a shared commitment to justice. It is protective and helpful, sharing the benefits of what we have learned to create lasting change. Your support helps us uphold our core commitments:
Centering Lived Experience: We recognize the profound wisdom within impacted communities. Your funding ensures that those with lived experience lead, partner, and collaborate as equals in research and decision-making.
Authentic Community Partnership: We are committed to creating the conditions for meaningful engagement and sharing power with communities. Your support enables us to build and sustain bridges with community members and organizations, generate buy-in, and connect communities with resources to set agendas and take action.
Actionable Research and Policy Agenda: We partner with communities to advance research and policy that eliminates racial inequities. Your investment drives co-created research, produces compelling data for policymakers, and translates findings into tangible policy actions and advocacy efforts. We have a track record of supporting policy changes like SB 464 and SB 65 and prioritizing pregnancy for housing support.
Building Capacity and Sharing Knowledge: We aim to equip community and academic leaders with the knowledge and confidence to drive change. Your funding supports workforce development, training programs, and the sharing of best practices like community-partnered research and anti-racist approaches through technical assistance.
A Strengths-Based Approach: We view communities through a lens of strengths and assets, not deficits. Your support empowers people with lived experiences to lead the work directly related to them and helps us focus on aspirations and solutions.
Your investment is crucial in fueling the transformative roadmap outlined in our strategic plan. By partnering with us, you are investing in proven expertise, deep community trust built over years, and sustainable growth as we become a permanent center.
