What We Offer

A Commitment to Community-Partnered Research: We are guided by the principles of “Nothing About Us Without Us” and “For Us By Us”. We authentically engage with and alongside the communities we serve, recognizing their profound wisdom and centering their experiences in our research. We aim for research to be co-created alongside the profound wisdom of impacted communities.

An Anti-Racist Research Framework: We are committed to consistently applying an anti-racism and justice-focused lens and approach to all areas of our work. We are finalizing and piloting our Anti-Racist Research Framework to ensure our research is rooted in justice and positively impacts Black women and birthing people. We have developed CBJ research criteria based on this framework.

Collaborative Research Opportunities: We foster a collaborative approach to working, recognizing the complexity of the problems we address. Explore our research agenda, which reflects shared community and academic priorities. We are actively developing strategic partnerships within UCSF and with external research partners to engage researchers conducting high-priority policy research.

Funding Opportunities: Learn about potential funding opportunities available through the Center to support birth justice-centered research. We are working to ensure that all CBJ RFPs reflect priorities of transparency, accountability, and trust.

A Focus on Impact and Translation: We believe that research’s true impact is realized when it catalyzes meaningful changes in healthcare policies and facilitates the scaling of promising models and practices. Our Research Core aims to ensure all Center research shows a direct link to a direct impact for people most affected, namely Black women and birthing people.

Opportunities for Black Scholars and Community Innovators: We are dedicated to being an academic home and hub for Black scholars and community innovators. We aim to uplift Black scholars’ work and provide support and resources for CBJ Faculty including research infrastructure, project funding, staff and trainee support. We are establishing endowed professor positions and affiliate faculty positions to support recruitment and retention.

Resources and Training: Access resources related to our Anti-Racist Research Framework and explore potential collaborations. We are developing a Community Academic Partnership toolkit.
